Inaugural BOOST-Chennaiyin FC Football Championship underway; MCC win in both age groups

The inaugural 64-team BOOST-Chennaiyin FC Football Championship kicked off at the Doveton School Ground here today, with teams from Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School registering wins in both U-13 and U-15 age groups. CFC U-15 striker P. Tejeshwar, who scored four goals last season for the CFC U-13s, featured for Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram in their 1-0 over Wesley Higher Secondary School.

The tournament will see more than 1100 kids participate, with top three teams from both age groups receiving special coaching sessions with the CFC coaching staff and select first-team players.

The first round of the tournament is of knock-out type, with 32 school teams each in the U-13 and U-15 categories playing a one-off knock-out tie. Following which, the 16 teams that win in each age category play out a round-robin style group stage of four groups of four teams each. The four group winners in each age category then progress to the semis of the tournament.

The first game of the day was an entertaining one with Sathyamoorthy High School beating Baktavatsalam Vidyashram 4-0, with Dhanush scoring twice.
And after Sir Mutha School received a walkover from St. Ann’s Matriculation in the U-13 category, Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram won 1-0 against Wesley Higher Secondary School. Bhavan’s attack was led by CFC U-15 star P. Tejeshwar, who netted four times for the CFC U-13s last year in the Hero U-13 Youth League.

Only one game went to the penalty shootout stage, between Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Anna Nagar and PSBB, KK Nagar in the U-15 age group after it finished goalless in regulation time. Chinmaya Vidyalaya kept their nerves to win 4-2 in the shootout.

MCC Higher Secondary School were impressive in both age categories, running out 3-0 winners in both ties – against the Agarwal Vidyalaya U-15s and Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Virugambakkam U-13s.
