Narrow defeat for Chennaiyin FC 'B'

The Chennaiyin FC ‘B’ team suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat in the Second Division League to the Jamshedpur FC reserves at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here today. Bedashwor Singh and B. Rohmingthanga netted for CFC while Baoringdao Bodo missed from the spot in what was a hard-fought encounter.

The boys in blue made four changes to the starting eleven from the defeat to Mohammedan Sporting in their previous encounter, boosted by the presence of two ISL winners in Fulganco Cardozo and Baoringdao Bodo. Lalliansanga Renthlei and Zonunmawia were the other two changes as Joseph Lalsanglura, Ajin Tom, Reamsochung Aimol and Joysana Singh dropped to the bench. And Chennaiyin didn’t get off to the best of starts, falling behind to a goal by Jamshedpur’s Gorachand Mamdi from a long throw-in on 10 minutes.

Chennaiyin however were back on level terms five minutes later when Zonunmawia picked out Bedashwor Singh at the far post with the latter scoring with a well-placed header. CFC ‘B’ then dominated and had a chance to go ahead when goalscorer Bedashwor was brought down in the JFC box. Up stepped Bodo but his penalty was saved by JFC keeper Harpreet Singh. Bodo had a couple of other great chances to score but the goal evaded him.

JFC went ahead soon after when CFC lost the ball in their own half. The hosts moved the ball to the right flank, from where a low cross into the box was converted by Gourav Mukhi to give his side a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Jamshedpur extended their lead after the break when Mukhi grabbed his second on the hour mark. CFC defender Mohammed Sarif Khan misjudged the ball and Mukhi capitalized to make it 3-1. But Chennaiyin continued to fight on and made it 3-2 on 66 minutes when striker B. Rohmingthanga ran on to Bedashwor’s defence-splitting pass and slotted home with an astute finish.

Rohmingthanga had two great opportunities to draw CFC ‘B’ level but JFC keeper Harpreet saved on both occasions. It was an end-to-end affair with Jamshedpur too enjoying chances on the break. Prosenjit Chakraborty went close for CFC with a free-kick in the dying stages but the hosts held on to run out 3-2 victors.

After three tough away fixtures to open their campaign, Chennaiyin FC ‘B’ face the Bengaluru FC reserves in their first home game on Friday 6th April, 2018 at the SSN College Ground in Chennai at 4 PM.
