Rafael's First CFC Interview – 'New country, new hopes, new expectations'

Chennai, September 3, 2019: Two-time Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC have added more firepower to their ranks with the signing of Brazilian attacking midfielder Rafael Crivellaro.

The 30-year-old joins Chennaiyin on the back of a two-year spell in the Portuguese top-flight with C.D. Feirense. In conversation from his home in Portugal, Rafael shared his excitement on signing with CFC. “I am very happy to join Chennaiyin FC, a new experience in a new country with a lot of new hopes and expectations.”

When asked what prompted him to come to India and make Chennai his destination, he revealed, “I have heard only good things about the club. In fact, CFC’s former captain (Henrique) Sereno and I spoke, and he told me how well-organized the club is, how it is a family atmosphere and most importantly how supportive the fans are. The project at Chennaiyin is also something I felt I would like to be a part of.” Coincidentally Rafael, just like Chennaiyin’s former title-winning skipper Sereno, has played at Portuguese Primeira Liga side Vitoria Guimaraes.

Rafael nurtured his game at Brazil’s S.C Internacional and Italy’s Empoli. Subsequently, the creative Brazilian’s career has seen him play in the Brazilian, Portuguese,UAE, Polish and Iranian top divisions. He won the 2012-13 Taca de Portugal (Portuguese FA Cup) with Vitoria, while also featuring in the UEFA Europa League with them as well as F.C. Arouca.

“I would describe myself as more of a technical player who likes to build play as well as attack. I like to focus on passing, technique, control and organization. I am really looking forward to connecting with my teammates and bringing the best out of each other as we work towards achieving success in the coming season,” Rafael analysed.

Looking ahead at the upcoming season, Rafael shared his aspirations, “My aim is to help the team finish at the top of the table. Then obviously to focus on assisting and scoring goals, but the primary objective is to help the team. I also hope to help the young Indian footballers with my experience.”

Before signing off, Rafael shared a message for the fans. “I am really excited and happy to be a part of our big Chennaiyin family now. I hope we can have a memorable season ahead, which will only be possible with your support. See you all soon!”
