Chennaiyin FC's B team was launched on January 12, 2018, comprising seven newly signed AIFF Elite Academy graduates along with talented youngsters scouted from Tamil Nadu and the entire country. They contest in the Hero 2nd Division League and other national tournaments. They made their debut bow in the Don Bosco Fr. McFerran Trophy All India Football Tournament 2018 and proceeded to the quarter-final stage. With an average age of 18 years, the CFC B team had a great learning experience in their inaugural Hero 2nd Division League, beating teams like Mohammedan Sporting and Langsning FC, who boasted experienced professionals in their ranks.
The B team is fundamentally a link between the youth teams and the senior squad. This move is aimed at facilitating the transition of players to the senior team and ensuring their development continues through exposure in a competitive environment. It serves as a platform for the youngsters to get consistent game time. Members of the B team from previous season who have graduated to the senior team for the 2018-19 season are Hendry Antonay, Zonunmawia, Bedashwor Singh and Samik Mitra.
