Clifford Miranda stresses confidence and consistency as the Marina Machans prepare for a challenging test against the Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the VYBK Stadium
Chennaiyin FC head coach Clifford Miranda has emphasised the importance of confidence, attacking precision and tactical discipline as the Marina Machans prepare to take on Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) 2026/27 fixture.
Reflecting on the team’s performances in the opening fixtures, Miranda highlighted the shared understanding between the players and the coaching staff regarding the team’s style of play and areas for improvement, while stressing the need for greater confidence and precision in the attacking third.
“The good part is that the players and I are on the same page. We think in the same way, and we know what needs to be corrected. The other part is to make them believe in themselves, to be a bit more confident, sharper, more precise and more deadly in the final third,” Miranda explained.
Speaking about the challenge posed by Mohun Bagan Super Giant, the coach acknowledged the quality of the opposition but insisted that his side would remain committed to its approach.
“We are cautious, but we want to control the game. We won’t change our style of play. Of course, depending on the opponent, the circumstances and the availability of players, we can make changes, but we prepare for every opponent,” he said.
Recognising Mohun Bagan’s quality, Miranda also stressed that Chennaiyin have the ability to compete through their collective strength and unity.
“There is no denying that they have very good quality, but my team is no less. For me, the biggest strength is the team, rather than any individual. If we control the game and have that unity, I think it is going to be a good result for us,” he added.
Miranda also spoke about the team’s defensive organisation, noting that mistakes are part of football while emphasising the importance of maintaining concentration. With Chennaiyin continuing to work on their attacking efficiency, the coach remained confident in the team’s overall defensive structure.
Meanwhile, defender Emmanuel Imanishimwe reflected on his adaptation to playing in central defence and his experience with the Marina Machans. The defender expressed confidence in his ability to settle into the role, having previously played in the position during his time in Cyprus.
Discussing his experience in India, Imanishimwe highlighted the importance of building cohesion within the squad as the season progresses.
“It’s a pleasure to be in a squad like this. We are here to support and build the team. As international players, we have something to contribute, but we have to be one team, not four international players. I think we are starting to come together, and we will see some improvement in the next game,” he said.
On the squad front, Miranda confirmed that Glan Martins, Vignesh and Maheson Singh are injured, while Harmandeep Singh has recently returned to fitness. The coach also reiterated the importance of managing players’ recovery as Chennaiyin prepare for the upcoming fixture.
