The Marina Machans dominated large spells at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, creating several chances, while a missed penalty and two late red cards added to the drama.
Chennai, October 31, 2026: Chennaiyin FC were held to a goalless draw by Kerala Blasters FC in their first home fixture of the Indian Super League 2026/27 season at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday. The Marina Machans produced an encouraging attacking display, creating several promising chances and testing goalkeeper Amrinder Singh throughout the contest, but neither side could find the breakthrough in a dramatic Southern Derby.
Chennaiyin began on the front foot after an evenly contested opening. Irfan Yadwad had an early opportunity in the 17th minute, but could not make the most of a good delivery. The resulting corner brought another chance, with a header narrowly missing the target. As the half progressed, the Marina Machans began to take control, with Madih Talal pulling the strings in midfield.
Talal tested Amrinder from the edge of the box in the 31st minute, before the goalkeeper produced another fine save to deny Irfan four minutes later. Nikola Stojanovic came close with an effort that went just wide in the 38th minute, while Brison Fernandes’ header narrowly missed the target shortly before half-time. Chennaiyin went into the break having registered six shots and seven corners, while Kerala were yet to record an attempt on goal.
The Blasters returned with greater attacking intent after the interval, and the visitors were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 50th minute when the referee pointed to the spot following sustained protests from their players. However, Adrian Luna’s penalty struck the post, allowing Chennaiyin to remain level.
Mohammad Nawaz was called into action soon after, producing an excellent save to deny Andre Green in the 54th minute. Ayush Chhetri tried his luck at the other end, while James Bolton headed wide from a Luna corner as both teams looked to break the deadlock.
Chennaiyin continued to threaten, with Amrinder once again coming to Kerala’s rescue in the 67th minute before Irfan came agonisingly close with a powerful strike a minute later. Luna sent a free-kick off target in the 72nd minute, while Kosović also tried from distance later in the half.
The closing stages brought further drama. Amrinder produced a sensational one-on-one save in the 89th minute to deny Chennaiyin another opportunity. Tempers then flared between players from both sides, resulting in straight red cards for Emmanuel Imanishimwe and Andre Green in the stoppageminute. With both teams reduced to ten men, the contest ended in a goalless stalemate after fourminutes of stoppage time.
The Marina Machans will now turn their attention to their next fixture against East Bengal FC on November 7. Chennaiyin will once again take the field at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, looking to build on their performance and secure their first win of the season.
